Super Nani is not a period film but it sure feels like it is a product of the 1980s. It’s hero, Bharti (Rekha), is the ideal, traditional Bhartiya naari. She cooks, prays and loves her family members unconditionally. Despite being a doting and nurturing wife and mother, she gets little in return. That’s because her family is filled with members who would give the antagonists on saas-bahu TV shows a run for their money with their histrionics.
Everyone in the Bhatia clan speaks at decibel levels more suited in rock concerts. They are constantly irritated with Bharti’s old-fashioned ways. Her husband (Randhir Kapoor, awful) thinks her place is only in the kitchen. Her son and daughter-in-law find her concern and advice intrusive. Her daughter is also annoyed. Nani suffers the insults quietly. The angel in poor Nani’s life is her US-returned, goody two-shoes grandson, Mann (Sharman Joshi). They bond as he shares her love for tears. Glycerine, we are certain, is in abundant supply in the Bhatia household. Mann is on a mission to change Nani’s status from “doormat” to well-respected. How? By making her India’s next top model.
